Camisetas NATIONAL TEAM
Ben and Ernie invite Kath Younger, Registered Dietitian and popular nutrition and wellness blogger, onto the show to discuss how her health journey led her to seek financial health and wellness. Kath started her blog katheats.com in 2007 to record her experiences exploring healthy foods and healthier eating habits, and has now expanded to cover natural beauty products as well as lifestyle topics like fitness and motherhood. In 2016, Kath began using YNAB and started improving her financial health. Today she is a bona fide budget nerd!
In today’s episode Kath breaks down her financial plan in detail, including her groups and categories (the structure of which was inspired by Ramit Sethi), how she manages checking and savings accounts, how she and her husband share spending and planning responsibilities, and much more!

I pay my barber and mechanic in cash. It became too annoying not having a cash account because it was significant money I needed to be accounting for.
OMG do I relate to Kath about yellow and even numbers.
My kids all have a category in my budget where we keep their cash and I love it! I love that when they think they have more money than they do, we can go back and see exactly where they spent it and have a discussion about if they would still spend their money that way today if they had the choice. I'm hoping to teach them thoughful spending. Even though she doesn't get an allowance, my 4 year old has a category, too, where we put money she gets as gifts. I extra love that because when we're out shopping and she wants a toy, it's in the budget and it's her own money. She wants McDonalds for lunch? I don't have to spend the family dining out money! She has her own.
Was there something wrong with Ernie’s audio? There were some really long awkward silences there. Poor Ernie!
I feel the same about the yellow haha I do think the yellow should be a different color since it is so similar to the overspend on credit cards. I love seeing peoples categories! It gives me great ideas
This is an excellent episode from someone who's life is as crazy any one of us and really breaks it down.
Kath is such a dynamic and motivational speaker and would ❤ to see and episode on how she organizes YNAB for her business!
Would love to see a full episode on cash accounts!
Poor Ernie couldn’t get a word in edge-wise! ❤️🫂
I think I'm the type of budget nerd that steers towards the other end re: having even/round-looking numbers – I can't STAND a category that is always a perfect "100", "800" or similar; it looks SO fake to me 😂as in it's a category that has never had any movement and it feels sterile or not "lived in" 😆 Most of my categories are literally numbers like "365.84" (yes, two decimals!) and I look at it with satisfaction thinking: Ah yes. Look at all the life in this category. 🥹
Absolutely there with Ben – I am meticulous about my budget, but the bit of my brain that controls my food is a literal toddler 😂.
its funny my husband and i have a similar setup. Joint acct for all family spending but personal checking account for his personal spending money. It is %100 percent because i track everything down to the pennies in my wallet and my husband doesn't want to have to track anything 😅
So relatable! I feel exactly the same about cash being just free money!
I’m so with you on the yellow vs light green color for categories!! 🤣
The category talks are great! I just started using ynab and seeing how different people use it themselves has helped me round out my true expenses sooner and feel more prepared while im trying to get fully to rule 4. Only a month in and at 22 days AoM.
Omg! I love that she uses Ramit Sethis method and YNAB. I just did a fresh start in January and switched to only 4 groups!! And I am with you on the yellow I got rid of all my targets bc I just couldn't 😂😂 love this ❤
Missing the YNAB wins at the end 😢
It really resonated with me when Kath was talking about YNAB taking away the mental maths. I am relatively new to using YNAB but I’ve always budgeted. My system ended up looking like some ledger from 100 years ago! (Maybe slight exaggeration) I realised I needed to change when doing my budget was causing me anxiety. YNAB has been great for me, so easy. I’ve just bought a coat for walking which cost nearly £300. I’ve wanted it for ages but could never afford it or justify it. Two months into YNAB and it’s mine! 👏🏻
I started a cash account last November. I like it because my brother pays me cash for his rent. This month I used it for birthday gifts. This way it tracks his payment and tracks who I gave money to. I used to put the money in the bank and then turn around and take it back out.
Ben & Kath I just ordered my kids the Greenlight debit card for their allowances. I have a 9, 7, & 4 yr old. 4 yr old didn’t get a card yet but the cash was becoming too much to keep up with and the my 7 yr old started asking when could he get his own card like I have. They give a 30 day free trial (which I’m still in) then $4.99/month for up to 5 kids for the basic plan. The app lets you set up percentages for giving, savings, and spending, you can control how much they can spend at certain places and connect chores or jobs to making money. My kids only have tablets right now and I haven’t checked if they can download the app to their tablet but I can show them at a glance on my phone how much they have. But if your kids have a phone, they’ll be able to see at a glance what they have available and check off their chores/jobs as they go. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for sharing your categories with us Kath 😊
Do not use a cash account. All cash goes to Entertainment. If we spend cash on something else, we do a $0 transaction switching the categories.
Is it possible to cover the content in a much more compact and less time?
Seems like Ernie’s audio may be out of sync, especially at the end of the video!
Somehow YNAB turns the dread of upcoming bills into anticipation! So strange, but glad to hear that, as a recent YNAB devotee, my obsession is par for the course!
I’m at 30 days for age of money!! Yippee
We need this series to be more often, please!!!
I actually like the yellow. It helps me to assign dollars when the paycheck comes in every 2 weeks.
I believe Ramit actually gave a shoutout to YNAB in his book and that you could use it as part of automatic money management
I’m 2 years away from retirement but just re-did all my categories based on retirement. I did need to do that to see my actual “retirement “ essential expenses, etc.
