Soccer with a twist … We challenged the lodge members to a soccer match but made some slight changes to the rules. It turned into an epic and funny showdown with a thrilling ender and a celebration that won’t be forgotten thanks to all the Go Pro cameras on hand.

Have you ever played a soccer match in the rainforest before? A swampy field and rain boots make it difficult to stay standing not to mention it is the rainforest so it’s really humid and hot. Once we realized we wouldn’t win the game since they had home turf advantage, we decided to make things more interesting my changing some of the rules.

Interesting fact: Depending on the location your are in such as ours, Peru, the word «Gringo» is used by Spanish speaking locals to describe a foreigner, often with white skin and usually in a discrediting or derogatory manner.

0:27 – 1-0 PERU – They scored while we were trying to set up
0:57 – Big save by Mikey
1:06 – Fil goes down for the first of many times
1:21 – 2-0 PERU – They caught us pinching and counterattacked
1:30 – Grabbing shirts is fair game
1:39 – Fil slides 3 times in an effort that sparks The Gringos
2:11 – 2-1 PERU – Kevin’s volley from the sideline sneaks over to Fil who slides and stomps the ball in from the ground
2:42 – 2-2 TIE – Fil steals with a handball and centres to Kevin who has an easy tap in while Fil flips his shirt for the celey
3:08 – Another big save by Mikey
4:09 – Fil is still sliding around out there
4:16 – 3-2 GRINGOS – Mikey starts the rush, drives the net where everyone slipped and the ball came loose to our teammate who had an open net
4:35 – 3-3 TIE – Team Peru scores
4:49 – Kevin tries a bicycle kick and finds out they are not easy
4:53 – 4-3 PERU – Team Peru scores
5:10 – Kevin is on top of his competition…literally. It’s no rules now
5:27 – Fil shows off his ninja kicking skills
5:55 – 5-3 PERU – Team Peru scores
6:02 – NEXT GOAL WINS – As the sun began to set, we decided to reset the score since it is Rainforest Rules and send the game to Extra Time!
6:20 – GRINGOS WIN 1-0 – Mike rolls the ball ( underhand ) across the field and hits Robbie ( former Rep League Competitor in soccer ) in full stride who strikes the ball with ferocity to the upper half of net as the goalie stood helpless. For the first time ever the Gringos are the Rainforest Champions!

Since our celebrations may have been a bit overboard, we offered to buy the first round of beer as a friendly gesture to our Peruvian counterparts, congratulating them for an awesome game. Nothing like a good ol’ CHEERS, BEERS, YARRRR!!!
