Bellingham fired a staff memeber amidst disagreements:

How Have We Lost The Number 10 In Football?

The position used to be reserved for the cream of the crop in the team who was behind all attacks. As such, one had to be gifted in dribbling, passing and shooting, making such players a problem in every attacking sense. Outside of these superficial characteristics, they also had to have incredible football IQ and vision of the plays they intended to create. An added bonus that has been spotted through the years is also a Messiah complex and an ability to ‘carry’ the team when needed. For decades, the most important and creative players in every team played this position; Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Sneijder, Riquelme, Dennis Bergkamp amongst others.
The role though technically an attacking midfielder has long been dubbed the ‘number 10’ because the number was worn by those in that position. It was called the ‘enganche’ in Argentina, which translates as ‘hook’, to describe its importance in connecting midfield and attack. As sides began to move away from the 4-3-3 of the 1970s to the 4-3-1-2 or 4-4-2 diamond of the 1980s, the ‘hook’ became even more important. In the modern era, the number 10 usually plays underneath a single center-forward, with a double pivot in behind in a 4-2-3-1 structure. A single number 10 is also used in a 3-4-1-2 shape.
With the evolution of the game, many teams prefer to use defensive midfielders or box to box midfielders in positions where the 10 traditionally used to operate. This and the lack of defensive cover from players in this position is slowly leading to its extinction in the modern game.

  1. As a football fan who is older than 90% of people who are going to read this comment. Believe me when I tell you, this exact topic has resurfaced so so so many times since 1970s, and it always resurfaces whenever there is a big mega number 10 legend who is about to retire, I’ve seen it many times over the last 5 decades. And I’m reading the future her, there will be a time in which a new Maradona appears “I hope I will still be around” and he will make us believe that football is still beautiful and creative. Just like what happened with Messi. There will be always a new generation a new Messi no matter how long it takes, and people will always enjoy.

  2. Salzburg oscar gloukh looks like a more traditional 10 tbh. Played there vs inter and looked good. Odegard is a 10, but is playing more as an 8 this year. Foden tbh could’ve been a world class #10 in a previous generation

  3. De Bruyne, Odegaard, Eriksen and even Palmer are pure 10s.
Games nowdays maybe allow less freedom in terms of tricks, but their purpose on the pitch is still the exact same : make differences thanks to their vision and technical abilities rather than their athleticism or their work-rate.

His work-rate and his versatility are only what disqualify Bernardo as a pure 10 now for example, but common, when you see the guy touching the ball, don't you feel the elegance of a Kakà? His volatil build and average pace, the profile of an Ozïl?

  4. Where, are those number 10 players the likes sneijder ozil kaka in the modern era when a number 10 was found the likes of pep guardiola changes the player to a winger or a more attaking player like what happened to musiala and the likes of klopp change a number 10 to a number 6 like what happend to macallister Bro I just miss the magic the likes of riquelme and zidane was creating in the midlfield but it looks like that kinda thing will happen in a very long time
