The Number 10 position – a number and position associated with the greatest of footballing greats. But this position has been marginalised in the modern era. Teams have moved from one pivotal playmaker to a collective creative effort.

Until recently. The Number 10 is returning, the Number 10 is reinventing. Alex Stewart explains.

  1. for me the position that pisses me off are number 9’s especially cherry pickers. ik they get goals but i can’t stand how it happens and as a coach i think i would honestly hurt a number 9. i wouldn’t put much play through my number 9. so i understand why some coaches don’t use 10’s like how we use to.

  2. So essentially the false nine has morphed back into a classic 10 who isn't lazy enough to track back. That was basically Paul Scholes' entire career. Sir Alex did it with Rooney once he lost his pace. As a Newcastle fan, Beardsley was the master of it. A goalscorer, a playmaker, dictate play and a menace to any team in possession. That kind of player might not have the goal or running stats, but my god they make the difference.

  3. Does anybody actually know what the 'no. x' role actually means? I've tried to lookup the different positions before and there are loads of different concepts and variations of what they mean – It really annoys me when people keep using all these terms like they expect you to know what they mean when there's actually no formal definition

  4. So a 10 is pretty much what all my FIFA career players are: guys who run around randomly. But my FIFA players dont actually help the team. Also FIFA 14 is one of the best FIFA games ever with the best soundtrack, you cant change my mind about that.

  5. I said this when 10s were out if fashion for a few years. The old 10s sat in zone 14 and distributed and cteate. Modern football (starting 15 years ago). Space and creativity was found by switching zones and positions. Overlaps, underlaps, deep 8s, false 9s. It was the lady static attacking position

  6. Kind of semantics really. In plenty of those 4-3-3s, one of the wingers often played more inside like a 10. This is still the case. Some years, depending on the coach and the players around him, Messi is probably more of a 10 than anything else. They never went away. Like a lot of things in football and modern life in general, the definitions simply became blurred.
