There is no real proof and no tangible evidence that suggests Madrid were exclusively ‘Franco’s team’. But Spain’s leader did undoubtedly used football for political leverage. Real Madrid’s history, their rivalry with Barcelona, the shape of modern Spanish football: without Franco, all of this would look very different.

  1. You oversimplified the Di Stefano affair. Besides, Barcelona bought the player from River Plate, who had the FIFA right,s. When Madrid learnt Barça were going to have Di Stefano in addition to Kubala they flew to Colombia in a hurry and negotiated with Millonarios, who had him on loan for four years with FIFA's permission. There's a lot more to it, but bottom line is trouble ensued and FIFA said to the Spanish federation to get their act together. A commision composed mostly by Real Madrid members and executives was oredered to solve the problem and they ruled that Di Stefano should play first year with one team, second year with the other and so forth. Barcelona said this was unheard of and rightly told them to stick Di Stafeno's contract where the sun doesn't shine and give them back the money they had payed to River Plate for the transfer, 2 mill pesetas in the 1950s, which was a fortune. That's how Di Stefano left Barcelona and started playing for Real Madrid

  2. Barça's attitude towards Madrid is the same as Catalonia towards Spain: throwing victimhood and saying that Spain robs us; that Madrid robs them. They are incapable of self-criticism. That myth of the external enemy will continue, because Madrid will not stop winning titles.

  3. Completely laughable. Not only you miss key information, you make the whole thing seem like not a big deal. That influence has effect to this day and hasn't been repaid, but it's so cool to make everyone think that they won any trophy in that era with pure sport, which clearly they didn't and there's thousands of documents and videos to prove it.
