Nike has agreed to sell «limited quantities» of Mary Earps’s England goalkeeper shirt after facing backlash for not making it available for purchase. The decision comes after a change.org petition calling on Nike to change its stance received over 150,000 signatures. Nike will also be selling goalkeeper shirts from three other competing teams at the Women’s World Cup – the US, France, and the Netherlands. However, it is unclear if the shirts will be available for fans of all ages and sizes. Earps, who won the Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper in the tournament, criticized Nike for not selling her shirt and stated that it sent a «scary message» to goalkeepers worldwide. In an earlier statement, Nike did not make a promise to sell women’s goalkeeping jerseys in the future, but in their recent statement, they said they were committed to retailing them for major tournaments. Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer described Nike’s decision as «overdue, but the right move» and emphasized the need for goalkeepers to be given the same recognition as outfield players.
