Football kit culture has become big business over the past few years. It’s estimated that the top ten clubs sold over 20 million shirts in 2021 between them. These days wearing a football shirt is not just about representing your club, it’s about style.
But where do football kits originate? Was there a time before kits? How have they changed?
David Goldblatt explores. Henry Cooke illustrates.

@TifoFootball VO error @3:53 “Bolton Wanderers appearance in the 1953 World Cup”. I think meant to be 1953 FA Cup Final.
Great vid. Awesome artwork. Best content as ever.
Holla at cha boi if you’re looking for content editors or gfx or qc
carbon footprint…..I switch off. Tifo the ultimate middle class w-anchor channel.
It would be awesome if u could share the history of jersey names, the materials used, etc
Beautiful
Well done to Bolton for an appearance in the 1953 World Cup! (3:50)
Nice video… one thing – where do Bayern sell kits… genuinely, I don't think i've ever seen somebody wearing a Bayern shirt! Admittedly i'm in the UK, but you see plenty of Barca shirts, PSG or Real Madrid occasionally – i've even seen Dortmund shirts!
So Bolton Wanderers were in the 1953 World Cup?
@06:20… Is that Castolo from Master League lmao?
Castolo the Legend ,The Myth ,The Goat: more than 1000 goals, 8 Ballon d'ors , 5 champions league countless leagues and cups
I've got to say that jazz in the background was top class.
Didn't know Hungary was in Germany and Poland.
Football kits looked horrible in the early 90s
While there were a lot of "gruesome" kits in the late 80s and early 90s the Euro 88 Dutch kit wasn't one of them.
So jersey numbers are an Aussie invention? CARRN!! 🇦🇺
Please never go back to the 1990's loose fitting shirts, with tiny shorts
Football kits always amuse me. Got a nice collection of kits myself but nothing focuses. Just tend to get the kits that I like. Tends to be championship teams more often than not.
Why was cotton replaced by polyester? I don't see the reason why they changed the material. Ployester is just plastic. Cotton is a lot more comfortable.
2:44 lost it at Anakin Sand
Bolton wanderers played in the 1953 World Cup did they!!? lol
There was a World Cup in 1953 and Bolton was part of it?? Interesting. You learn something new everyday.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE CASTOLO EASTER EGG
loved it
Why lots of clubs in UK and Argentina simply didn't used any club crests in their shirts until the 80's/90's???
I waited for my hometown club to be in this video and wasn't disappointed: Eintracht Braunschweig 4:57 🙂
Castolo! Master league legend
I still think heavy cotton with no adornments but club crest and number should be the norm.
Synthetic materials are just itchy rubbish and the advertising is getting out of hand.
2:15….players in polka dots would be gigachads…lol
Bananananananaaa
Why do you still call it a jersey?
What a topic this is
does anyone know why the sponsors in the 80s,90s and early 2000s were embossed but changed to heat applied plastic vinyl from 2006 onwards? likewise for namsets, flock material to the current material we have today.
"chromatic oddessy"…the eloquence and tone is overwhelming
My favourite kit VERY RARE AND UNKNOW Juventus 2017-18 third
I Mean It Looks Cool. But Why Did You Put The Forest Green Rangers Jersey On The Thumbnail?
Hold on…was their really a referee jersey color called "Anakin Sand"!? See 2:45…No, those color names are a joke! LOL "Flatulent Pistachio", "Bubblegum Idiot", "Manipulative Salmon" LMAO
I believe player names first became compulsory for the 1994 USA World Cup, after concerns that the American audience wouldn't have the foundational knowledge to otherwise identify players!
aw, never explained where the term "kit" came from for uniforms.
The sash still isn't popular.
On your own Linfield 😅 🇮🇪
I am a Bolton fan
Don Revie of Leeds United was the person who come up with the idea of selling shirts.
Bloke core history
bring back polka dot jerseys
Such a simple thing you don't really think about until YT recommends it
Thin you meant Leeds City, Leeds Utd didn't exist back then
Castolo, the master league hero
Favorite kits
1. Adidas Teamgeist Shirts from 2006
2. Nike Total 90 Shirts from 2004
Those for me are the most iconic designs of the modern era, I’m a collector as well and nothing has come close to those years
You forgot to mention the disappointing England kit which promises a cup every two years , but goes 'ome wit nuthin.
Not one mention of Liverpool’s first ever kit which was blue and white……
Wish you’d shown the Bristol Rovers quarters. Pretty much unique even now 😑
